Sailor runs aground after using a car sat nav

An aspiring sailor ran aground after using a car sat nav to guide his motorboat along the Thames.

The man, who was aboard a 32ft Myra Two motor cruiser, was rescued by coastguards shortly after setting out from London and heading down the Thames Estuary.
The captain and his passenger ran ashore at Holehaven Creek, near Canvey Island in Essex at midday on Sunday. They were trying to reach Rochester in Kent but coastguards discovered that they had set sail without any maps, emergency flares or even a radio.

“It transpired that the craft had run aground and in trying to re-float had taken debris into the engine water intakes.
“It also transpired that the boat had no charts, no flares, no functioning radio, and were navigating by a car sat-nav system.”
Coastguards took over from the police and towed the boat into docks at the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
A source said: “Leaving port with no radio, no maps and no flares is bad enough, but using a sat nav system designed for cars is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard in my life.
