Parents ‘Tried To Sell Baby Outside Store’

A Californian couple are due in court accused of trying to sell their six-month-old baby for $25 (£17) outside a Walmart store.

Patrick Fousek, who was on probation at the time, wandered up to two women outside the supermarket in Salinas, Monterey County, and asked to borrow a mobile phone.
The women claim the 38-year-old struck up a conversation before casually asking if they wanted to buy his daughter for the equivalent of £17.
They thought he was joking but Fousek persisted and tried to thrust the child into the arms of one of the women.
Believing he was being serious, the woman called the police.
Fousek rushed to a nearby car where the baby’s 20-year-old mother Samantha Tomasini was waiting and they drove away before police had time to arrive.
But the quick-thinking women took down the vehicle’s registration number.
Police traced the car to an apartment block where they reportedly found the couple high on methamphetamine and the baby living in squalor.
The child was taken into care and the couple were charged with endangering a child, attempting to abandon a child and being intoxicated on methamphetamine.
Fousek received a further charge for violating the terms of his probation.
He was jailed along with his twin brother in 2006 after probation officers found the men were running a methamphetamine lab.
