Eat-and-run student banned from Mayfair

Janis Nords, a Latvian national, admitted leaving more than £5,800 in unpaid bills at a number of restaurants where he had treated his “high maintenance” girlfriend to luxurious food and fine wines.
District Judge Daphne Wickham banned Nords from entering six of London’s most exclusive postcodes for a year, telling him: “They are the places that have all the expensive restaurants. You are not to go into any part of that area at all.”
The 27-year-old, who is £15,000 in debt, was also told to return to court on December 14 with a plan for repaying the money he owed.

Nords had previously admitted three counts of not paying for goods and services, and asked that another six similar offences be taken into consideration.
Restaurants where Nords left without paying included the Michelin-starred Helene Darroze at the Connaught in Mayfair, where the bill was £965, and the Pearl restaurant at the Chancery Court Hotel, where the bill included £270 of vintage champagne.
The spree, which lasted a fortnight, came to an end when Nords and his girlfriend, Zana Berzine, attended L’Oranger in St James’s, racking up a bill of £1,021.73.
Waiters became suspicious when Nords repeatedly went for a cigarette, and demanded he come back inside to pay the bill. He ran away immediately after handing over a visa card, but was chased and detained by staff.
